FKA Twigs’ approach to sexuality has always been complex and confrontational.
Sometimes she confuses traditional gender roles, for instance in "Hide", where a phallic plant grips between feminine thighs. Sometimes she capitulates to them disturbingly, as with the video for "Papi Pacify", in which an enormous man repeatedly plunges his fingers down her willing throat.
It was only a matter of time until Twigs made the leap from this potent mix of dominance and subversion to the rituals of bondage and sadomasochism. The new video for LP1-cut "Pendulum" depicts the singer trussed up by her own hair in an array of painful-looking positions. The parallels with the song itself, which details a crumbling relationship and Twigs’ agonies of emotional compromise, are obvious. “You only want me in other spaces”, she sings, her limbs contorted weirdly, but her gaze defiant.
