Ice Sculptures of Tomorrow
A make-up artist is an unlikely collaborator for a shoe brand. But for Camper somehow, it makes perfect sense, especially when the make up artist is as unconventional as Isamaya Ffrench. For the latest spring/summer 2017 TWINS artist collaboration unveiled during Paris Fashion Week under a cloud of dry ice, she brings her own unique style with a new sneaker. While studying 3D design at Chelsea College of Arts, and Product and Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins FFrench started her make-up career painting faces for children’s birthday parties and she’s never lost her playful spirit.
She describes herself as a ‘makeup artist slash illustrator’ and she uses the face as a canvas to create all sorts of masks and illusions from peeling skin to a camouflage of autumn leaves. Her vision goes way beyond any traditional ideas of beauty. She has collaborated with Hermes, Moncler and YSL, celebrities such as Rihanna and Marilyn Manson, and created looks on the catwalk for Junya Watanabe and Olivier Theyskens. She is currently Creative Artistic Consultant for Tom Ford Cosmetics.
From a young age, she trained in disciplines such as high board diving, martial arts and dancing, all of which are referenced in the collection through her choice of materials. She wanted to create a functional and durable product, with a waterproof zip. To shoot the collection she chose to go to Iceland and modelled the designs herself, leaping through the dramatic glacial landscape.
We love the Arabic words for “twins” and “sport” embellished onto the block colouring along with the chunky soles and sleek look to the sneakers, really representing Ffrench’s love of story-telling, freedom and adventure.
The collection is available from CamperLab, selected Camper stores and online via camper.com at £125.
